Lobsinger wins Cadet World bronze, Doi & Giorgio place fifth in Azerbaijan

BAKU, Azerbaijan – Anastasia Lobsinger of Martinez, Calif. won a bronze medal at 70 kg/154 lbs. on the final day of women’s freestyle action at the FILA Cadet World Championships on Friday.
Lobsinger finished with a 2-1 record, including a second period pin over Gulmaral Yerkebayeva of Kazakhstan in the bronze-medal match.
She opened with a loss to the eventual silver medalist Moa Lena Nygren of Sweden by fall. When Nygren reached the finals, Lobsinger was drawn back into the repechage. A win over Kelsey Raab of Canada, 5-2, 7-0 placed Lobsinger in the bronze-medal round.
She becomes the third U.S. women’s freestyle wrestler to win a FILA Cadet medal, joining gold medalist Marina Doi of Kingsburg, Calif. at 38 kg/83.75 lbs. and silver medalist Kayla Miracle of Bloomington, Ind. at 56 kg/123.25 lbs., who won their medals on Thursday.
Two U.S. women placed fifth in their weight class on Friday after dropping bronze-medal matches, Regina Doi of Kingsburg, Calif. at 40 kg/88 lbs. and Francesca Giorgio of West Lawn, Pa. at 52 kg/114.5 lbs.
Both finished with 1-2 records. Regina Doi fell to Ganbold Munkhtsetseg of Mongolia, 0-2, 1-1 in her bronze-medal bout. Georgio lost to Natalia Kubaty of Poland, 2-3, 1-3 in her bronze-medal bout.
Amy Hou of Rome, Ga. finished 10th at 46 kg/101.25 lbs., while Cristta Hartinger of Lancaster, N.Y. was 11th at 60 kg/132 lbs.
The United States placed fifth in the team standings with 48 points. Japan was the team champion with 66 points, followed by Russia in second with 63 points. There was a tie for third between Ukraine and Azerbaijan with 57 points.
The Greco-Roman competition begins on Saturday. U.S. first round pairings will be posted when available.
