Oklahoma City defeats No. 1-ranked King College in finals of Cliff Keen Oklahoma City Duals for women

Rich Torterelli OCU
10/21/2012

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University prevailed over top-ranked King (Tenn.) 26-10 to capture the Cliff Keen Oklahoma City Duals title Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.

The second-ranked four-time defending Women’s College Wrestling Association champion Stars improved to 6-0 on the season. OCU has gone 75-0-1 in its last 76 duals and won its last 60.

King entered the event with a No. 1 team ranking, with OCU at No. 2.

OCU took the final three matches against King. Brittney Roberts at 155 pounds, Heather O’Connor at 170 and Sanoe Spencer at 191 each won. O’Connor, a sophomore from Napa, Calif., dropped the first period against Lorrie Ramos before coming back with a fall in the second.

“It’s a great day for OCU wrestling,” OCU coach Archie Randall said. “There were quite a few pivotal matches in the dual itself. At 155, Brittney Roberts defeated Julia Salata, who was like her old nemesis, whom she pretty well beat her up. And then sophomore Heather O’Connor coming through with the fall sealed it against Lorrie Ramos from King. Lorrie Ramos beat us last year. Our incoming freshman heavyweight Sanoe Spencer from Hawaii had an excellent match against Kerri Bumpers.”

King’s Sarah Hildebrandt won the 123-pound bout to cut OCU’s lead to 9-7. Audrey Morehouse responded for OCU with a 1-0, 1-0 victory over Kat Perez at 130.

Krista Revelle of King got the win at 143 to slice OCU’s edge to 15-10. Roberts answered with a 5-0, 2-0 win at 155.

Randall anticipates 24 teams coming to next year’s Cliff Keen OCU Duals.

“Six years ago, we couldn’t have an event like this,” Randall said. “There were 16 teams here, 20 scheduled to come. It was a two-day event. All the teams got at least six matches, which was really good for the sport.”
