Nickerson named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week

Troy Nickerson (Chenango Forks, N.Y.) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for the week of July 27-August 2. Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. The announcement will be made each week on Wednesday. Nickerson dominated the 119-pound weight class at the ASICS/Vaughan Junior National Championships in Fargo, N.D. last week. He was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler for both the Greco-Roman and freestyle tournaments. In the Greco-Roman tournament, Nickerson recorded nine wins, five by technical superiority and two by fall, on his way to the gold medal. He outscored his opponents 66-5 in the three-day event. In freestyle, Nickerson was even more dominant, again winning nine matches, eight by technical superiority and the other by fall. He outscored his opponents 86-2 in the freestyle competition. In 2003, Nickerson was a Cadet double national champion, winning in both Greco-Roman and freestyle as well. Nickerson has won four New York state titles, tying the record set by Jesse Jantzen, who went on to win an NCAA title in 2004. Nickerson will have the opportunity to win a record fifth state title in New York this upcoming school year. He is regarded as one of the best college prospects in the nation right now.
