LeVesseur named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week

Marcus LeVesseur (Minneapolis, Minn./Augsburg) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for the week of January 4-10. Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. LeVesseur owns the nation's current longest winning streak by any college wrestler with 100 straight wins. He won five matches in the last week to tie the second-longest winning streak in college wrestling history, a number originally set by Dan Gable. The longest winning streak in college history is 159, set by 2004 Olympic gold medalist Cael Sanderson. LeVesseur, a junior 157-pounder, helped Augsburg to a 4-0 dual record at the Oregon Classic Duals in Redmond, Oregon last weekend. He defeated 2004 NCAA qualifier Tony Hook of Oregon State 8-3, T.J. Ferguson of Cal Poly by a first-period fall, Justin Barden of Pacific by a first-period fall and Rich Vigorito of Southern Oregon 3-2. Earlier this week, LeVesseur defeated Austin Scarset of Augustana 15-3 to win his 100th consecutive match. LeVesseur, the two-time defending NCAA Division III champion at 157 lbs., has led Augsburg to a 6-1 record this season. He is 16-0 on the season and with 20 more wins this season, LeVesseur will be on pace to break Sanderson's record of 159 straight wins. LeVesseur's major is Health and Physical Education.
