Reiter named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week

Mack Reiter (Gilbertville, Iowa/Minnesota) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for the week of January 18-24. Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. Reiter, a freshman 133-pounder at the Univ. of Minnesota, posted a 4-0 record at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals in Cleveland, Ohio last weekend, helping the sixth-seeded Gophers to a 4-1 dual record and a third place finish. In the first round, Reiter defeated 10th-ranked Jason Borrelli of Central Michigan by injury default. Reiter had just taken a 4-3 lead in the match at the time of the injury as Minnesota defeated the Chippewas 20-18. In the quarterfinal round, Reiter pinned 12th-ranked Mark Moos of Michigan in the second period, leading the Gophers to a 21-16 win. Moos qualified for the NCAA Tournament last year at 125 lbs. Reiter then posted the biggest win of his young career, defeating Illinois' Mark Jayne 7-4 in the semifinal round. Jayne was ranked third in the nation at the time of the match. A Big Ten champion last year, Jayne placed seventh at the NCAA Tournament. However, Minnesota lost that dual 20-15. In the third-place dual, Minnesota defeated Lehigh 24-13 led in part by Reiter's 1-0 victory over sixth-ranked Matt Ciasulli, who also competed at the NCAA Tournament last year. For the season, Reiter has posted a 25-3 record. Reiter is currently undecided on his major. Click here to view previous Athletes of the Week
