2001 Manitoba Open in Canada set for this weekend, Feb. 2 and 3 The 2001 Manitoba Open, in Manitoba, Canada, is set for this weekend, Feb. 2 and 3. Competition will begin on Friday night, and finals will be Saturday night. Women and men freestyle wrestlers from the United States are scheduled to compete. Many of the Women's Team USA members will be competing in Manitoba under their own club names, but USA Wrestling will be sending two wrestlers as part of the winter tour program. Patricia Miranda (Saratoga, Calif./Dave Schultz WC) will compete at 112.25 pounds and Sandra Bacher (San Jose, Calif./Dave Schultz WC) will compete at 149.75 pounds. Miranda competed in her first World Championships in 2000 and came home with a silver medal. Bacher is a three-time World medalist: a 1999 World Champion, a 1998 bronze medalist and a 1997 silver medalist. Women's club and college varsity teams planning to attend include UM-Morris, Sunkist Kids, Missouri Valley and others. The men's freestyle U.S. contingent is expected to be strong. Many veterans and some exciting newcomers should be in the field. This is not one of the USA Wrestling tour events in men's freestyle, but many athletes are attending as part of their club programs. 2000 Olympian Kerry McCoy (Bethlehem, Pa./NYAC) is expected to compete for the first time since Sydney. He placed fifth in the Sydney Olympic Games at 286 pounds. Team USA members Chris Bono (Gilbert, Iowa/Sunkist Kids), Lee Fullhart (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC), Joe Williams (Coralville, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) and Bill Zadick (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) are scheduled to compete. Bono and Zadick both finished second at the 2000 Olympic Trials. Bono wrestles at 152 pounds and Zadick competes at 138.75 pounds. Fullhart and Williams placed third at the Olympic Trials. Fullhart competes at 187.25 pounds, while Williams wrestles at 167.5 pounds. Chad Lamer (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) is expected to compete at 213.75 pounds. Lamer placed fourth at the 2000 Olympic Trials. Others planning to compete include: Jeff Bedard (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army), C.C. Fisher (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC) and Ty Reynolds (Colorado Springs, Colo./Unattached). All three wrestlers will compete at 138.75 pounds. Bedard wrestles for the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program while Fisher and Reynolds are members of the U.S. Olympic Training Center Resident Athlete Program.
