Iowa State/Oklahoma Real Time Results



The fourth rated cyclones of Iowa State take on the number eight ranked Oklahoma Sooners here in Ames, IA. The Cyclones lead the series, 39-30-4, including ISU's 19-17 quarterfinal victory over the Sooners at the 2001 NWCA National Duals. This featured match will spotlight 12 wrestlers ranked in the nation's top 10 at the respective weights. The match will begin at 149 pounds. Here are the starting lineups for tonights matchup: 149: Benjie Winegarden, ISU vs. Jared Frayer, OU 157: Cole Sanderson, ISU vs. Brian Burrows, OU 165: Joe Heskett, ISU vs. Robbie Waller, OU 174: Perry Parks, ISU vs. Michael Barger, OU 184: Cael Sanderson, ISU vs. Josh Lambrecht, OU 197: Zach Thompson, ISU vs. Waymon May, OU Hwt: Mark Knauer, ISU vs. Leonce Crump, OU 125: Sirish Neal or Jacob Moore, ISU vs. Matt Ridings, OU 133: Matt Azevedo, ISU vs. Witt Durden, OU 141: Zach Roberson, ISU vs. Michael Lightner, OU 149 Winegarden vs. Frayer Frayer came out quick in the first period scoring off a high crotch. Winegarden escaped after being rode nearly one minute, only to be taken down again from a double leg eventually turned several times to end the scoring in the first period at 11-1, for Frayer. In the second period, Windgarden chose down and scored a two point reversal. Frayer scored his own reversal and three nearfall points. The score going into the third period was 16-5 Frayer. Frayer won going away with a 22-5 tech. fall. Match Score: Frayer 22, Winegarden 5 Team Score: OU 5, ISU 0 157 Cole Sanderson vs. Burrows The first period was a very conservative match with bosth wrestlers looking to contol the tie. Burrows scored first in the first period off of a beautiful firemans carry on the edge of the mat for a 2-0 lead. Sanderson fought hard for the reversal with 30 seconds left in the period to tie the score at 2-2. The first period ended with an escape period to make the score 3-2 Burrows at the end of the first period. To begin the second period, Sanderson scored a reversal while Burrows quickly escaped to take the score to 5-3 Sanderson. Sanderson scored two points for stalling after pushing the action, to end the second period with a 6-4 advantage. Burrows quickly escaped at the beginning of the third period to cut the lead to 6-5 Sanderson. Burrows picked up the pace and Sanderson was warned after several exciting flurries on their feet. Burrows was hit for stalling again and awarded two points to take the match at 8-5. Match Score: Sanderson 8, Burrows 5 Team Score: OU 5, ISU 3 165 Heskett vs. Waller One of the key match ups for both teams, Waller scored first off of a Heskett shot to take the early 2-1 lead. Heskett quickley escaped to cut the lead to 2-1 in favor of Waller. Waller scored with one minute to go in the first period off of a beautiful double leg to take the surprising 4-1 lead. Waller put on a nice ride for the reamainder of the period. Heskett chose down to begin the second period and escaped quickley. A wild scramber off of a Waller shot resulted in a Waller a takedown and a commanding 6-2 lead half way through the match. Waller cut Heskett to narrow the gap at 6-3 Waller. Waller chose neutral to start the third period with the ISU crowd urging Heskett on. Waller shot a quick shot off the whistle to score again, leading 8-3. Waller continued with a punishing ride. Heskett escaped with 30 seconds left and quickley scored a 2 point takedown, decperately looking for a cradle with the time ticking down. Add riding time for Waller, he surpises the ISU crowd with a 9-6 victory for the Sooners. Match Score: Waller 9, Heskett 6 Team Score: OU 8, ISU 3 174 Parks vs. Barger A wild first period with several flurries on their feet, Parks locked up a cradle at the end of the first period for a 2-0 lead. Barger opened up the second period with a quick escape. Parks responded with a single leg takedown midway through the period to widen the lead to 4-1. Parks rode Barger and eventually forced a warnign for stalling from referee Keith Poolman. As the second period ended, Parks still had a 4-1 lead. Parks began the third period on bottom and earned the two point reversal twenty seconds later to take the 6-1 lead. Add another stall call & Parks took a 7-1 lead. Parks cut Barger loose with one minute left in the match in hopes of a major decision. Parks could not score the needed takedown and won the match 8-2 with riding time. Match Score: Parks 8, Barger 2 Team Score: OU 8, ISU 6 184 Cael Sanderson vs. Lambrecht Sanderson scored quick off of a front headlock counter. Sanderson looked to play the takedown game and quickly cut Lambrecht loose and added another takedown with his patented ankle pick, then...the takedown clinic begins for Sanderson with coach Douglas urging his wrestler to work on his feet. Sanderson put Lambrecht on his back with seconds left in the period to take a 13-4 lead. The period ended with Lambrect escaping. Sanderson leads 13-5. Lambrecht chose down to begin the second and quickley escaped only to be taken down to his back off of far side ankle pick, widening his lead to 17-7. Ath this point, it was a typical Sanderson match as he tech. falled Lambrecht by a huge 25-10 margin, earning 5 team points for the Cyclones. Match Score: Sanderson 25 , Lambrecht 10 Team Score: ISU 11 , OU 8 197 Thompson vs. May This match quickly turned into a defensive chess match with both wrestlers working hard to control the tie up's. The first period ended scoreless. Thompson chose down to begin the second periodand escaped twenty seconds later to take the 1-0 lead. Both wrestlers worked hard defensively avoiding repeated takedown attempts, with Thompson forcing the issue late in the second period. May chose down to begin the third period and escaped to tie the score at 1-1 with two minutes to go in the match. Thompson continued to push the action and forced a stall warning on May with 1:30 remaining to take the narrow 2-1 lead. Thompson fought off several May double leg attemps to hold on for the 2-1 victory. Match Score: Thompson 2, May 1 Team Score: ISU 14, OU 8 Hwt. Knaeur vs. Crump Crump came right out and showed his athleticism with a powerful bear hug and took Knaeur down to his back for two nearfall and the quick 4-0 lead. Knaeur scored the escape with 1:40 remaining in the first period to narrow Crumps lead to 4-1. Knaeur shot a high crotch only to be countered and taken down to his back again, pushing the lead for Crump to 9-1. Knaeur chose neutral to start the second period and went right back to the bear hug forcing a stall warning on Knaeur. Crump continued to look for the big throw from the bear hug through out the period, and eventually took Knaeur again with a snatch single off of the same bear hug for a 11-1 lead, and 3 nearfall points to end the period with a 14-1 advantage. Crump chose down to begin the third period and showed his weakness on the bottom while being rode out for over a minute before getting the one point escape to take a 15-1 victory. Match Score: Crump 15, Knaeur 1 Team Score: ISU 14, OU 11 125 Ridings forced an agressive style to Moore early on and scored five takedowns on the overmatched Moore, taking a 10-4 lead to end the first period. Moore chose down to start the second period earning the escape point to be taken down again off of a Ridings counter. Ridings leads 12-5 with a minute and a half left in the second period. The rest of the second period was more of Ridings scoring several takedowns to take his lead to 16-7 at the end of the second period. Ridings cruised the rest of the way to take a 20-7 major decision. Match Score: Ridings 21, Moore 7 Team Score: OU 16, ISU 14 133 The first period ended scoreless with Azevedo nearly scoring off of a high single leg two times in the period. Durden chose top to begin the second and turned Azavedo with a cross body ride quickly for three points before Azavedo escaped, giving Durden the 3-1 lead with 1:30 remaining in the second period.
