Wynn Michalak (Caro, Mich./Central Michigan Univ.) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for the week of December 13-19.
Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. The announcement will be made each week on Wednesday.
Michalak, a sophomore, won an individual title at 197 pounds at the Reno Tournament of Champions in Reno, Nevada, Dec. 18. He defeated two-time NCAA Champion and No. 1 ranked Jake Rosholt of Oklahoma State in the finals, 5-1. Michalak entered the tournament with a No. 4 ranking nationally.
During the tournament, Michalak won five matches, scoring two pins, a technical fall and a 6-2 decision over Phil Davis of the Univ. of Pennsylvania in the semifinals, in addition to the victory over Rosholt. Michalak now boasts a 14-0 record for the season.
Michalak helped lead the Chippewas to a second-place finish as a team at the Reno Tournament of Champions. Oklahoma State won the team title with 194.5 points, followed by Central Michigan with 123 points.
Michalak was an All-American as a freshman, placing sixth at the NCAA Championships. He was a 2005 Mid American Conference (MAC) champion, and was named MAC co-Freshman of the Year along with teammate Luke Smith. He had a team high 11 pins in 2004-05 and finished the season with a 35-10 record.
He was a two-time Michigan state high school champion for Caro High School, and placed in the state three times. His career high school record was 232-8. Michalak also won all-state honors in football as a quarterback two times.
