Sebolt named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week

T.J. Sebolt (Centerville, Iowa/Centerville High School) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for the week of February 21-27.

Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. The announcement will be made each week on Wednesday.

Sebolt, a high school senior, completed a record-setting career by winning his fourth Iowa state high school title at the Iowa State Wrestling Championships, held in Des Moines, Feb. 24-25. He became the 17th Iowa high school wrestler to capture four state titles.

In the championship finals, Sebolt defeated Zach McCool of West Delaware of Manchester, 9-3, to capture the 130-pound title in Class 2-A.

Sebolt ended his high school career with an amazing 207-1 record, setting the career win record in Iowa. He also had a record 192-match winning streak. Sebolt also holds the Iowa state record with 137 career wins.

A crowd of over 16,000 gave Sebolt a standing ovation during the tournament. Two other standing ovations were given that evening, one to wrestling legend Dan Gable, and another to World champion Terry Brands, who was being inducted into the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame).

Note: To nominate a wrestler for TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week, send the athlete's name, accomplishments for the week and career accomplishments to Gary Abbott at gabbott@usawrestling.org
