Spenser Mango named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week



Spenser Mango (Flourissant, Mo./USOEC/Gator WC) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for the week of June 13-19.

Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. The announcement will be made each week on Wednesday.

Mango won a gold medal at 55 kg/121 lbs. at the World University Championships in Ulan Bator, Mongolia, Friday, June 16. Mango becomes the first American to win a gold medal in Greco-Roman at the World University Championships, going back to 1998.

Mango won three matches on the way to his gold medal. He opened the tournament with a 4-2, 4-1 victory over Dan Finh Hue of Vietnam. In the semifinals, Mango stopped K. Hasegawa of Japan, 1-1, 5-7, 6-0.

In the gold-medal match, Mango defeated B. Yasein of Iran, 5-4, 2-1. It was the first World title for Mango at any age level.

Mango was second at the U.S. Nationals on the Senior level this year. He won gold medals at both the University National Championships and the FILA Junior National Championships this spring.

Mango won the FILA Junior World Team Trials on June 9 and will have a chance to win a second World title at the FILA Junior World Championships on Aug. 29-Sept. 3 in Guatemala City, Guatemala.

Mango is a member of the the U.S. Olympic Education Center program at Northern Michigan.
