Menís semifinalists determined at American Airlines/New York AC Holiday International

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The semifinalists were determined in men's freestyle and Greco-Roman at the American Airlines/New York AC Holiday International Championships at the famous New York Athletic Club on Saturday.

Returning freestyle champions who advanced to the semifinals which will be held on Sunday included:
- Travis Lee (Ithaca, N.Y./New York AC) at 60 kg/132 lbs.
- Jared Lawrence (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs.
- Andy Hrovat (Ann Arbor, Mich./New York AC) at 84 kg/185 lbs.
- Tommy Rowlands (Columbus, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.

In the quarterfinals, Lee defeated Jesse Arnett of the Burnaby Mountain WC, 0-1, 2-0, 7-0. Lee will face 2006 U.S. Nationals champion Zach Roberson (Ames, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) in the semifinals on Sunday. It will be a rematch of the New York AC Holiday finals last year, won by Lee, 0-5, 3-1, 2-2

Lawrence pinned Steve Rennells of McMaster in the quarterfinals in the second period, 1-0, 1:40. He will battle Phillip Simpson (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) in Sunday's semifinals.

Hrovat, a member of the 2006 U.S. World Team member, defeated Walter McCrindle of Guelph in the quarterfinals, 3-0, 6-0. Hrovat will battle Tony Gansen of the Sunkist Kids in the semifinal round.

Rowlands defeated Greg Wagner of the New York AC in the quarterfinals, 6-0, 2-0. His semifinal opponent will be Jaimie Cox of Guelph.

Only one returning Greco-Roman champion was able to advance into the semifinals, Adam Wheeler (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs., who stopped Jeff Courtney of the USOEC, 9-0, 6-0. He will face Robbie Smith of the New York AC in the semifinals.

In addition to Hrovat, one other member of the 2006 U.S. World Team was able to advance to the semifinals, Justin Ruiz (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. in Greco-Roman.

Ruiz won his quarterfinal match handily, scoring a pair of five-point throws from the reverse lift position to defeat Stas Shamota of the New York AC, 8-0, 5-0. His opponent in the semifinals will be Ken Sogabe of Japan.

Mo Lawal (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC), a member of the 2005 U.S. World team in freestyle, has moved up in weight class and entered the 96 kg/211.5 lbs. division. Lawal won his quarterfinal match over Konrad Duziak of the New York AC, and will battle David Rechul of the New York AC in the semifinals on Sunday.

High School star Corey Jantzen (Shoreham, N.Y./Team RAD) was defeated in the quarterfinals in an intense three-period match against Seshito Shimizu of Japan. Shimizu won the first period, 3-0, but Jantzen came back in the second period with a 1-0 win. The third period was a battle, with Shimizu earning a 4-3 win. In the opening round, Jantzen upset 2006 Sunkist Kids International champion Chris Fleeger (Ithaca, N.Y./New York AC).
