Tim Wittman Named Interim Wrestling Coach At Bucknell University

LEWISBURG, PA - Tim Wittman, a 1992 graduate of Penn State University and an assistant with the Bison program last year, has been named interim wrestling coach at Bucknell University, Director of Athletics John Hardt announced. Wittman succeeds John Hangey, who left Bucknell to return to his alma mater, Rider University, as that program's top assistant. "While we are sad to see John move on, we are thrilled that Tim will be stepping in to serve as our interim coach," stated Hardt. "He did an outstanding job as an assistant last year and is obviously very familiar with our program. Tim's appointment as interim coach will certainly strengthen the continuity of the wrestling program here at Bucknell." Wittman arrived in Lewisburg in April of 1999 as an assistant coach, and immediately settled in with the Bucknell program. He organized practice sessions, implemented weight training and conditioning programs, assisted in evaluating prospective student-athletes, and handled some scheduling. In addition, Wittman was responsible for helping to balance the teams budget and had a major role in developing a yearly summer wrestling camp at the University. Prior to his duties as a Bison assistant coach, Wittman was the assistant coach of the State College Area high school team from 1995 to 1999. In addition to many of the same responsibilities he had while at Bucknell last year, he assisted in organizing parent club meetings. Wittman coached two State College wrestlers to PIAAA State Championship crowns. Wittman began his coaching career in 1992 as an assistant at Rider University in Lawrenceville, NJ. Some of his responsibilities with the Broncs included assisting with the promotion of an annual alumni golf fundraiser, helping to run practices, and teaching freestyle technique. As an undergraduate at Penn State, Wittman was a three-time NCAA Division I All-American and a two-year captain. He led the Nittany Lions to the national team championship in 1991, and won Eastern Wrestling League individual championships in both 1991 and 1992. At St. Mary's High School he posted an impressive 114-11 mark, and won the states as a junior and was the runner-up as a senior. Wittman was inducted into the District 9 PIAAA Hall of Fame earlier this year, and was inducted into the Pennsylvania Junior Olympic Hall of Fame in 1994. Bucknell wrestling competes in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) with Army, Brown, Cornell, Columbia, East Stroudsburg, Franklin & Marshall, Harvard, Lehigh, Navy, Penn, Princeton, Rutgers and Syracuse.
