Iowa's Brent Metcalf named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Jan. 8-14

Brent Metcalf (Davison, Mich./University of Iowa) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Jan. 8-14.

Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. The announcement will be made each week on Wednesday.

The top-ranked Metcalf was named Outstanding Wrestler after leading the Iowa Hawkeyes to the team title at the National Duals on Jan. 12-13 at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Metcalf went 4-0 at the National Duals and did not allow an offensive point at 149 pounds in turning in a dominating performance. He pinned Cornell's Adam Frey, defeated No. 12 Josh Wagner of Missouri 12-4, downed NCAA runner-up Josh Churella of Michigan 4-2 and then beat No. 6 Jordan Burroughs of Nebraska 6-2.

Metcalf, a sophomore, is 16-1 this season for the top-ranked Hawkeyes. He is scheduled to face No. 4 Lance Palmer of Ohio State and No. 8 Bubba Jenkins of Penn State in dual meets this weekend.

Metcalf was a four-time, undefeated state champion coming out of Davision, Mich. He was a six-time Junior Nationals champion.

He redshirted for one season at Virginia Tech before transferring to Iowa. He compiled a 14-0 record during the 2006-07 season while competing unattached after he enrolled at Iowa.

Note: To nominate a wrestler for TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week, send the athlete's name, accomplishments for the week and career accomplishments to Craig Sesker at csesker@usawrestling.org
