Mike Grey named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Jan. 29-Feb. 4

Mike Grey (Rockaway, N.J./Cornell University) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Jan. 29-Feb. 4.

Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. The announcement will be made each week on Wednesday.

The second-ranked Grey posted a 4-1 win over No. 6 Lou Ruggirello to boost No. 18 Cornell to a 28-14 win over No. 12 Hofstra before a sellout crowd on Feb. 2 in Ithaca, N.Y.

Grey, a freshman, scored a takedown with 45 seconds left in the first period and rode Ruggirello out. Grey doubled his lead to 4-0 after scoring a reversal with 20 seconds left in the second period. Ruggirello, ranked No. 1 earlier this season, escaped in the third period, but could draw no closer.

Grey is 29-5 this season at 133 pounds. Among his wins this season was a 10-3 triumph over third-ranked Joey Slaton of Iowa at the National Duals.

Grey compiled a 157-2 high-school record at Delbarton School. He became the first four-time New Jersey state champion after winning titles at 103, 112, 119, and 125 pounds. He was a Junior Nationals freestyle champion and won Senior High School Nationals.

Note: To nominate a wrestler for TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week, send the athlete's name, accomplishments for the week and career accomplishments to Craig Sesker at csesker@usawrestling.org
