Iowa's Mark Perry named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for March 18-24

Mark Perry (Stillwater, Okla./University of Iowa) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for March 18-24.

Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. The announcement will be made each week on Wednesday.

Perry completed a remarkable career for the Iowa Hawkeyes by winning his second straight national title on March 22 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. Perry and fellow NCAA champion Brent Metcalf, the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler, helped lead top-ranked Iowa to its first NCAA team title since 2000.

Perry had surgery on his right knee on Jan. 22 and returned to competition just over six weeks later to place second behind Michigan's Eric Tannenbaum at the Big Ten Championships. Perry avenged that loss by beating Tannenbaum, a four-time All-American, 5-2 in the NCAA finals at 165 pounds on Saturday night.

Perry re-injured his right knee during the second period of the NCAA finals match with Tannenbaum, but he managed to keep going and pull out the win.

Perry, also a four-time All-American, finished his Iowa career as a three-time national finalist. Perry placed second, third, first and first in four trips to the NCAA tournament.

Note: To nominate a wrestler for TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week, send the athlete's name, accomplishments for the week and career accomplishments to Craig Sesker at csesker@usawrestling.org
