Faruk Sahin named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Sept. 2-8

Faruk Sahin (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Sept. 2-8.

Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.

Sahin won a silver medal in Greco-Roman wrestling on Sept. 5 at the 26th Military World Wrestling Championships in Split, Croatia.

Sahin, of the Army's World World Class Athlete Program at Fort Carson, Colo., took the silver medal at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. after losing the championship bout to Afshin Biabanger of Iran, 0-5, 0-5. Both periods were scoreless after the first minute. Sahin was in the down position first in each period, and Biabanger took full advantage of Sahin with a lift and throw in each period for the margin of victory.

Sahin gained the championship bout by beating Mykola Savchenko, Ukraine, 1-1, 2-1 in the qualification round. Later, Sahin needed all three periods to defeat Hyouk Eom, Korea, 3-4, 5-2, 3-0.

Sahin placed second at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials.

Note: To nominate a wrestler for TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week, send the athlete's name, accomplishments for the week and career accomplishments to Craig Sesker at csesker@usawrestling.org
