2001 New York State Collegiate Wrestling Coaches Association End of the Year Awards Announced

The following individuals have been voted this year*s recipients of the New York State Collegiate Wrestling Coaches Association Wrestler of the Year, Coach of the Year and Freshman of the Year. Congratulations go out to these individuals for their fine performances during the 2000-2001 wrestling season. 2001 Wrestler of the Year: Maurice Worthy (United States Military Academy) 174 lbs Maurice Worthy of the US military Academy is this year*s New York State Collegiate Wrestler of the Year. Maurice compiled a 34 -1 overall record this season at 174 pounds. Worthy*s only loss of the season came in the finals of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. Worthy captured first place finishes at the Bearcat Open hosted by Binghamton University, the Cornell Invitational, the All Academy Championships, the New York State Championships and the EIWA Championships. Worthy a senior from Toms River, New Jersey was also voted as the co- EIWA Wrestler of the Year. 2001 Freshman of the Year: Tom Waldron (Cornell University) 141 pounds Tom Waldron from Cornell University has been voted the 2001 New York State Freshman of the Year. Waldron, a native of Williamsport, PA compiled a 23-13 overall record this season. The 141 pounder placed first at the Cornell Invitational, second at the New York State Championships and third at the EIWA Championships. Waldron represented the Big Red at the 2001 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships that were held at the University of Iowa. 2001 Coach of the Year: Tom Ryan (Hofstra University)For the second time in four years Tom Ryan of Hofstra University has been voted the 2001 New York State Wrestling Coach of the Year. Ryan guided the Pride to an 8 -7 dual meet record this past season. In tournament competition Hofstra was fourth at the Midland*s Championships and captured the East Coast Wrestling Association team title. At the NCAA Division I Championships, Hofstra had two individuals earn All-American honors on the way to a 22nd place finish. Ryan was voted the 1998 NYS Coach of the Year as well.
