Dremiel Byers named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Aug. 18-24

Dremiel Byers (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Aug. 18-24.

Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.

Byers won a gold medal in Greco-Roman wrestling at the Ion Corneanu Memorial Championships on Aug. 22 in Pitesti, Romania.

Byers, a 2002 World champion who is also a member of the 2009 U.S. World Team, won all three matches in a four-athlete round robin to capture the title at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. His key victory was over veteran Ivan Ivanov of Bulgaria, the eventual silver medalist. Other victories were against Constantin Scutariu of Romania and Anton Dok of Croatia.

Byers has won a number of medals this summer. He won silver medals in the Heydar Aliyev Golden Grand Prix in Azerbaijan as well as the Pytlasinski Tournament in Poland.

Byers will compete in next month's World Championships in Herning, Denmark.

He also won a bronze medal in helping the U.S. win the team title at the 2007 World Championships. He also was a 2008 Olympian.
