Clarissa Chun named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for April 27-May 3

Clarissa Chun (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for April 27-May 3.

Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.

Chun won a gold medal in women’s freestyle at the Pan American Championships on May 1 in Monterrey, Mexico. Chun won the title at 48 kg/105.5 lbs.

Chun won the event for the third straight year.

Chun swept Venezuela’s Mayelis Caripa, Peru’s Flor Quispe and Canada’s Jasmin Mian in two straight periods en route to the title.

Caripa won a World bronze medal in 2007 and is a six-time Pan American Championships gold medalist.

Chun, a 2008 World champion and 2008 Olympian, was competing for the first time since the 2009 World Championships. She is back after being out with an injury.

Chun will be one of the favorites at June’s U.S. World Team Trials in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Note: To nominate a wrestler for TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week, send the athlete's name, accomplishments for the week and career accomplishments to Craig Sesker at csesker@usawrestling.org
