Helen Maroulis named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Aug. 30-Sept. 5

Helen Maroulis (Rockville, Md./New York AC) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Aug. 30-Sept. 5.

Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.

Maroulis turned in an excellent week of training in women’s freestyle wrestling as the U.S. continues preparations for the World Championships, set for Sept. 12-18 in Istanbul, Turkey.

“Helen had a great camp,” U.S. National Coach Terry Steiner said. “She seems to be very focused and hungry right now. She’s on a mission.”

Maroulis has made her second World Team and will compete at 55 kg/121 lbs. She placed eighth in the 2008 World Championships at 51 kg/112.25 lbs.

Maroulis, 19, won the U.S. Open and U.S. World Team Trials this year. She won a silver medal at the 2011 Junior World Championships. She is a two-time Junior World bronze medalist.

Maroulis wrestles for Simon Fraser University in Canada.
