Jon Reader (Ames, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for May 22-28.
Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.
Reader won a freestyle gold medal at the Hari Ram Grand Prix on Sunday in New Delhi, India. He won the title at 84 kg/185 lbs.
Reader won all four of his bouts on the day, including a 3-0, 4-0 win over Kim Gwan-Uk of Korea in the gold-medal finals. Kim was third in the final Olympic Games Qualifier in Helsinki, Finland, and is a two-time Korean Junior World Team member.
He opened the day with a technical fall over Gael Parvex of Switzerland, 7-0, 6-0. In the quarterfinals, he stopped Pawan Kumar of India, 4-2, 7-0 and then downed Svanidze of Georgia, 7-1, 6-0.
Reader was a 2011 NCAA champion for Iowa State.
