J.D. Bergman (Columbus, Ohio/New York AC) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for June 12-18.
Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.
Bergman won a freestyle title at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. at the Ziolkowski International on Sunday in Siedice, Poland.
Bergman, a member of the 2010 U.S. World Team, went 4-0 on the day. His gold-medal victory came over 2011 World silver medalist Serhat Balci of Turkey, 1-0, 1-0.
Other victories by Bergman were over Kamil Skaskiewicz of Poland, 1-0, 1-0, Kamil Wojciechowski of Poland, 7-0, 6-0 and Jozef Jaloviar of Slovakia, 0-1, 4-0, 4-0.
Bergman placed third at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials.
