ROCHESTER, Minn. – Champions were crowned in both men’s and women’s wrestling at the 2012 U.S. Beach World Team Trials at Ontario Beach Park on Sunday.
This event is the qualifying event for the 2012 FILA Beach World Championships. The Women’s Beach Worlds are in Pattaya, Thailand, Sept. 10-11. The Men’s Beach Worlds are in Budapest, Hungary, Sept. 24.
Capturing the title at Over 198 pound weight class was Jamison Sacco of Western New England. Sacco, who is a two-time Beach Nationals champion and winner of the Beach International Duals in 2011, won a four athlete round-robin to claim the title.
Sacco was second at the 2012 Beach Nationals, losing to champion Charles Fish of the U.S. Marines. He avenged that loss in the Beach World Team Trials, defeating Fish 2-1 on Sunday.
The champion at 198 pounds was 2012 Beach Nationals champion Donald Simmons of the U.S. Marine Corps. Simmons defeated two-time Beach World bronze medalist Jeff Funicello, 2-0, as part of his round-robin competition.
2012 Beach Nationals runner-up Mike Collura of G2 World Wrestling Academy was the 176-pound champion. He defeated unattached Ruslan Gabeer in a best-of-three series, needing all three matches. Collura won the first match 2-0, then lost the second match 2-0. In the third and deciding match, Collura won by a 2-1 margin.
The champion at 154 pounds was Donovan DePatto of the U.S. Marines, a 2011 Beach World silver medalist. He was uncontested in the World Team Trials.
The champion in the women’s 174-pound division was Trinh Nguyen, who beat Janet Spence in the final, 2-1. This was a match between Beach National champions from Saturday.
