NEW YORK, N.Y. – Five U.S. athletes won gold medals at the 2012 New York AC International in men’s freestyle on Saturday.

2012 Olympian and 2009 World bronze medalist Tervel Dlagnev (Columbus, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) won a tough battle at 120 kg/264.5 lbs., beating Russia’s 2012 Junior World champion Magomedgadzhi Nurasulov for the title, 1-1, 2-0, 6-0.

After dropping the first period after slipping and allowing a late point to the Russian, Dlagnev shut down Nurasulov for the next two periods and scored a technical fall in the final stanza.

Winning the Outstanding Wrestler award was young Austin Trotman (Boone, N.C/App State RTC), who defeated Koloy Kortoev of Russia in the finals, 1-0, 0-1, 1-0 at 84 kg/185 lbs. Third at the NCAA Championships last year for Appalachian State, Trotman has turned his focus towards freestyle and won his first international tournament on the Senior level.

There were three finals which featured two U.S. opponents.

The champion at 60 kg/132 lbs. was Jimmy Kennedy (Ann Arbor, Mich./NYAC), who swept 2011 U.S. World Team member Reece Humphrey (Columbus, Ohio/NYAC), 3-1, 1-0 in the finals. Kennedy won the first period on a three-point exposure from a scramble, then took the second by winning the clinch on offense.

Two of the all-USA matches went to the third period, and both winners scored in the deciding clinch from the defensive position.

At 66 kg/145.5 lbs., Chase Pami (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) stopped Adam Hall (New York, N.Y./NYAC), 1-0, 0-3, 2-0. Pami scored a defensive exposure on Hall as he attempted to score from the leg hold in the clinch.

At 96 kg/211.5 lbs., Wynn Michalak, Champaign, Ill. (Titan Mercury WC) also was on defense in the deciding clinch, and came out with a takedown on Cayle Byers (Stillwater, Okla./Titan Mercury WC) to win the match, 1-0, 0-1, 1-0

In a final held a few hours early due to a travel conflict for one of the finalists, 2009 World silver medalist Rasul Dzhukaev of Russia defeated former Michigan State NCAA qualifier Anthony Jones (E. Lansing, Mich./Michigan WC), 1-0, 1-0 at 74 kg/163 lbs.

The other individual champion was Azamat Tuskaev of Russia, who beat Yosuke Kawano of Japan, 2-0, 5-0.
