KRASNOYARSK, Russia – Keith Gavin (Columbus, Ohio/Lehigh Valley AC) was the lone U.S. entry on the final day of the world-famous Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix on Sunday.
Gavin, a Freestyle National Team member, finished the day with a 1-1 record, but was not eligible for the repechage rounds.
Gavin opened with a solid victory over Tsingel Ebaya of China, 3-1, 1-0. In his second match, he was defeated by 2010 World bronze medalist Soslan Ktsoev of Russia, 0-1, 2-5.
Ktsoev was beaten in the next round by two-time European champion and Olympian Anzor Urishev of Russia, which eliminated Gavin from the repechage. Ktsoev wrestled back to place fifth, while Urishev won the gold medal.
The U.S. had four entries in the tournament this year, led by a silver medal from Brent Metcalf (Iowa City, Iowa/New York AC) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and a fifth place finish by 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Coleman Scott (Stillwater, Okla./Titan Mercury WC) at 60 kg/132 lbs.
