Burroughs, Askren win Freestyle World Cup golds as USA nets four medals in Tehran, Iran

FILA, the international wrestling federation, has announced the individual medalists from the 2013 Freestyle World Cup in Tehran, Iran, Feb. 21-22. Medalists in each of the seven weight classes were posted in the FILA Database.

Gold medalists for Team USA were Jordan Burroughs (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids) at 74 kg/163 lbs and Max Askren (Hartland, Wis./New York AC) at 84 kg/185 lbs.

Biurroughs had a 5-0 record in the dual meet competition, extending his winning streak at the Senior level in men’s freestyle to 43 straight matches without a defeat in his career.

Burroughs was a 2012 Olympic gold medalist and 2011 World champion. In college, he was a two-time NCAA champion for University of Nebraska.

Askren had a 3-1 record in the World Cup, including a pin in his final match against Amir Mahamedov of Belarus.

Askren won a Special Wrestle-off in January to earn the spot on the 2013 U.S. Freestyle World Team. He won an NCAA title for Missouri in 2010.

Silver medal winners were Brent Metcalf(Iowa City, Iowa/New York AC) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and Tervel Dlagnev (Columbus, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Both had impressive 4-1 records during the World Cup.

Metcalf placed second in the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials last summer. Metcalf was a 2010 World Team member and won two NCAA titles for the University of Iowa.

Dlagnev placed fifth in the 2012 Olympics. He was also a 2009 World bronze medalist, fifth in the 2011 World Championships and two-time NCAA Div. II champion for Nebraska-Kearney.

The United States placed third as a team in the Freestyle World Cup with a strong 4-1 record. Their only loss came in pool competition to host Iran, which went on to win the team title for the second straight year.
