Tony Ersland Named Northwestern's Assistant Wrestling Coach



EVANSTON, Ill. Anthony J. Ersland, a 1997 University of Iowa graduate, was named assistant wrestling coach for the Wildcats today by head coach Tim Cysewski. Ersland comes to Evanston after spending the last three years at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Ill. His primary responsibilities after graduation, as a graduate assistant, included recruiting, developing and supervising daily wrestling practices,coordinating conditioning sessions and the demonstration of wrestling techniques. After two years as a graduate assistant, Ersland was promoted to head assistant under Dave Grant at Northern Illinois. He spent one year as the top assistant before joining the Wildcat staff. Prior to Northern Illinois, Ersland was at Mt. Pleasant High School where he was involved in an athletic administration internship, gaining experience dealing with officials and event/game management. He also organized team rosters and physical forms for the administration and coaches. He was also involved in numerous wrestling camps around the country, including The Michigan Special Olympics, the NCAA YES Program and the Dan Gable Sports Camp. Ersland earned a Psychology degree from Iowa and his M.A. in Athletic Administration at Central Michigan. As an athlete at Iowa,he was a four-year letterwinner and a 1997 NCAA Division I national qualifier competing on the Hawkeyes 1997 Big Ten and National Championship teams. He earned Academic All-Big Ten honors and received the Board of Control of Athletics Award from 1993-97.
