2001 USA Maccabiah Wrestling Team selected at Maccabiah Trials in Philadelphia, Pa., Nov. 5

The 2001 USA Maccabiah wrestling team was selected at the Maccabiah Trials competition held at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia on Nov. 5. The trials featured exciting international competition where high school, collegiate and veteran international wrestlers vied for spots on the team. The Maccabiah Games are a multi-sport competition similar to the Olympics. The Maccabiah Games are for Jewish athletes and held every four years in Israel the summer following the Olympic year. The wrestlers who made the team will compete in July in both Greco-Roman and Freestyle. One of the more interesting matches was Lindsey Durlacher (NCAA runner-up for Illinois) against Jason Silverstein (NCAA All-American at Purdue ) at 127.75 pounds. Silverstein tied the match with a high crotch to send it to overtime at 3-3, but Durlacher executed a slick reversal after being put down for passivity for a 4-3 victory The tournament often featured veterans versus top collegiate wrestlers. Solomon Fleckman, a former Junior National champion and two time all-American for Lehigh University who now coaches at Blair Academy, won an exciting match over college star Clint Wattenberg of Cornell, 4-0. The competition also featured a final wrestle -off where the second place finisher in each weight class could challenge the champion of the following weight class. Two weight classes were determined through this challenge system, 187.25 pounds and 286 pounds. 2001 U.S. MACCABIAH WRESTLING TEAM 54 kg/119 lbs. - Martvey Krepper (U.C.
