Simpson Named TheMat.com Athlete of the Week



Aaron Simpson (Tempe, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) has been named TheMat.com Athlete of the Week for the week of April 20-26. Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. The announcement will be made each week on Wednesday. Simpson won the the men's freestyle South Regional Olympic Team Trials Qualifier at 84 kg/185 lbs. in Kenner, La. this past weekend. Simpson won all four of his matches on his way to the title. In the semifinals, he defeated Pat Popolizio before downing Randy Pugh in the gold-medal match. With the victory, Simpson qualified himself for the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials-Wrestling in Indianapolis, Ind., May 21-23. Currently, Simpson is an assistant wrestling coach at Arizona State. As a competitor for the Sun Devlis, he was a two-time NCAA All-American.
