Junior Spencer Lee (120) of Murrysville (Pa.) Franklin Regional was selected to the First Team for the third time and seniors Isaiah White (160) of Oak Park (Ill.) O.P.-River Forest and Mark Hall (170) of Apple Valley (Minn.) joined him as repeat First Team selections as the 31st annual ASICS All-America Wrestling Team was announced.
The First Team has combined for more state or National Prep championships than any previous First Team. Led by Hall, who became the first wrestler to win six Minnesota state titles, the 14 First Team members have won 44 titles, and all 14 own at least two. Seniors Nick Suriano (126) of Oradell (N.J.) Bergen Catholic and Chad Red (132) of New Palestine (Ind.) finished their careers as unbeaten four-time state champions, juniors Yianni Diakomihalis (138) of Hilton (N.Y.) and Chase Singletary (195) of Blairstown Township (N.J.) Blair Academy also won their fourth titles, and 10 members of the First Team could finish their careers with four titles or more.
The ASICS All-America Team, selected by a nationwide panel of wrestling experts, is the only national all-star team for which wrestlers enrolled in all four high-school grades are eligible. ASICS is a title sponsor of the ASICS Vaughan USA Wrestling Fargo Junior National Championships and is a major benefactor of the sport at all levels.
“This team represents the best of the best in our schools today,” said Neil Duncan of ASICS and TW Promotions, Inc. “We are proud to have these young men, with their talent and work ethic, representing us. They are clearly the World and Olympic champions of the future.”
Members of the First Team, as well as the ASICS Wrestler of the Year, will be honored prior to the finals of the ASICS Vaughan USA Wrestling Junior National Freestyle Championships in July at Fargo, N.D.
The ASICS All-America Team includes eight wrestlers at each of the 14 high school weight classes – the First, Second, and Third Teams and five Honorable Mention selections. To be considered, a wrestler must have competed during the scholastic season, and all team members were selected at the weight class at which they competed, or would have competed, in their state tournament or the National Prep Championships this year.
Lee, selected to the First Team at 120 for the second straight year after earning 113-pound honors as a freshman, could become the first four-time First Team honoree next season. Hall earned his second straight honor at 170, and White was the 152-pound selection in 2015.
After no freshman earned First Team honors in the team’s first 26 years, Adam Busiello (106) of Manorville (N.Y.) Eastport-South Manor made it five straight seasons a freshman was selected. Junior Austin O’Connor (145) of Chicago (Ill.) St Rita and a pair of sophomores, Gavin Teasdale (113) of Jefferson (Pa.) J.-Morgan and Hall’s Apple Valley teammate, Gable Steveson (220), brought the number of First Team underclassmen to six.
In addition to their 44 scholastic titles, the 14 First Team members combined to post three Junior National and 11 Cadet National titles, and five are World Team members. The Second and Third Teams each own 31 state or National Prep titles. The Second Team has won five Junior National and 10 Cadet National titles, but the Third Team actually owns the most Fargo titles – seven Junior National and 17 Cadet National crowns, along with one World Team berth.
A record six states had multiple First Team selections, led by Pennsylvania’s three: Teasdale, Lee and Mason Manville (152) of Kingston Wyoming Seminary. Claiming two each were Illinois (O’Connor and White), Indiana (Red and senior Blake Rypel (182) of Indianapolis Cathedral), Minnesota (Hall and Steveson), New Jersey (Suriano and Singletary) and New York (Busiello and Diakomihalis). Completing the First Team: senior Osawaru Odizhiguwa (285) of Portland (Ore.). David Douglas.
Fifteen high schools had multiple wrestlers selected, led by Bergen Catholic, Blair Academy and Albertville (Minn.) St. Michael-Albertville, each with three. Apple Valley, Hilton, Oak Park-River Forest, Wyoming Seminary, Bethlehem (Pa.) Catholic, Elyria (Ohio), Lawrenceville (Ga.) Archer, Lombard (Ill.) Montini, Orland Park (Ill.) Carl Sandburg, San Marino (Calif.), South Park (Pa.) and St. Paris (Ohio) Graham each had two selections.
Pennsylvania placed 22 wrestlers on the squad, New Jersey 13 and Illinois and Ohio 12 each to lead all states. Pennsylvania placed 11 on the top three teams, and Illinois was next with five. Minnesota had eight overall selections, followed by California and New York (six) and Indiana (five). The 112 wrestlers selected come from 23 states.
