Ohio Mafia claims 2017 NWCA/USA Wrestling National Scholastic Duals championship

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – Ohio Mafia went undefeated at the NWCA/USA Wrestling National Scholastic Duals this weekend in Crawfordsville, Ind., to claim the 2017 title.

To move on to the gold-medal pool, Ohio Mafia lit up the competition in the pool tournament, taking out Indiana Renegades Central, 49-15, Illinois Inferno, 49-3, and Virginia, 59-0.

Waiting for them in the gold pool were Indiana Gold, Georgia and 2016 champions Illinois Outsiders.

In the first round, the Mafia took nine of 14 bouts, including six with bonus points. Ohio earned pins at 160 pounds from Jaden Mattox and 170 pounds from David Crawford and secured another six points with Jordan Decatur winning by forfeit at 126 pounds.  

In the second round, the Mafia, who finished second last year, avenged last season’s loss to the Outsiders, edging them 26-23.

With the Mafia winning eight bouts, Illinois continued to threaten, picking up two majors and a pin to stay within reach.

At heavyweight, newly crowned Folkstyle national champion Tony Cassioppi of Illinois stuck Alec Moore-Nash in 1:47 for the only six points of the bout.

Ohio stayed ahead with the help of bonus points from Mattox and Decatur.

In the final bout of the day, the Mafia beat out Georgia in a 32-26 battle.

Ohio Mafia won five of the first six matches, but the Outsiders responded with three-straight pins, coming from Mason Parris (220), Isaiah McWilliams (285) and AJ Black (106) to trail by only two team points.

The Mafia rattled off three wins by decision to ultimately seal the dual and the 2017 title.
