MINNEAPOLIS - University of Minnesota head wrestling coach Brandon Eggum has announced the addition of 125-pound, 2017 All-American, Sean Russell to the Golden Gophers. Russell, who has wrestled at Edinboro for the last four seasons, will transfer to the University of Minnesota and have one year of on-mat eligibility remaining.
“We are excited to add Sean to our program, he will be a great addition to our room with the intensity he wrestles with,” head coach Brandon Eggum said. “I know he is excited about wrestling in the Big Ten and wrestling the best competition in the country, those are things that really attracted us to him as a person and as a wrestler. He is just flat out a competitor and we are so thrilled to welcome him into the Gopher family.”
Russell brings in a career record of 97-24 and is a three-time NCAA qualifier to go along with his NCAA All-American finish in 2017. He has been the champion of the Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) each of the past three seasons and is a three-time Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) champion. Russell has been a seeded wrestler at the NCAA Championships twice, and has 8-6 career record at the NCAA Championships.
Hailing from Lawrenceville, Ga., Russell will add a big presence to the Gophers 125-pound position. The Gophers will now return three All-Americans to the 2018-19 team with Russell, Lizak and Tommy Thorn.
Attending Collins Hill High School, Russell’s talents have been no surprise. Sean’s father George wrestled for Gardner-Webb University while his brother Codi is a current wrestler at Appalachian State. Coming out of high school, Russell was a highly touted recruit being a four-time Georgia state champion and winning a Georgia-record eight straight youth state titles.
Russell joins the 2018 signing class of Patrick McKee (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville), Brayton Lee (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg HS), Gable Steveson (Apple Valley, Minn./Apple Valley HS), Caden Steffen (Zumbrota, Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa HS), Ryan Thomas (Saint Paris, Ohio/St. Paris Graham HS), Jake Gliva (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS), Kasper McIntosh (Portage, Ind./Portage HS) and Garrett Joles (Boyceville. Wis./Boyceville HS) that has been in the conversation for best recruiting class in the nation.
