LAS VEGAS, Nev. – USA Wrestling’s Elite Accelerator Program’s women’s freestyle wrestlers made a big impact at the U.S. Open Championships on Friday.
Winning a Senior gold medal at 53 kg was 17-year-old Tiare Ikei (Honolulu, Hawaii/EAP), who scored a stunning 14-4 technical fall over veteran star Katherine Shai of the Titan Mercury WC in the championship finals.
Ikei, a 2018 Cadet World bronze medalist, has been competing on the Senior level for the first time this season. She is still attending high school. She had bonus point wins in all three of her bouts, scoring a pair of technical falls and a pin on the way to the title. Ikei was named Outstanding Wrestler in the Senior women’s freestyle tournament for her amazing effort.
The Elite Accelerator Program (EAP) is a progressive developmental movement based at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., aimed at molding young wrestlers into World and Olympic Champions.
Two other EAP women athletes closed out their Senior U.S. Open with bronze medals, winning both of their bouts on Friday after suffering semifinal losses on Thursday night.
