Four U.S. wrestlers are ranked No. 1 in the United World Wrestling Ranking Series standings heading into the 2019 international competition season. These rankings will change starting next weekend with the first UWW Ranking Tournament of 2019.

The U.S. athletes at No. 1 in the world are 2018 World champions Adeline Gray (76 kg/women), Kyle Dake (79 kg/freestyle), David Taylor (86 kg/freestyle) and J’den Cox (92 kg/freestyle).

The initial points in the 2019 UWW Ranking Series were scored at the 2017 Senior World Championships, held in Budapest, Hungary. Athletes will be able to earn Ranking Series points at the Senior Continental Championships in 2019, as well as four UWW Ranking Series events for each discipline.

The first UWW Ranking Tournament is the Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, January 24-26, which serves as a Ranking Series event in men’s and women’s freestyle.

Yesterday, UWW announced that the 2019 and 2020 Ranking Tournaments will be broadcast by FloSports.

The United States has 17 wrestlers ranked going into the 2019 Ranking Tournament schedule, which includes the 12 medalists from the 2018 World Championships, plus seven other U.S. wrestlers who placed in the top 10 of their weight class in Budapest.

2018 World silver medalists, who enter this year at No. 2 in the UWW Ranking Series, are Sarah Hildebrandt (53 kg/women), Kyle Snyder (97 kg/freestyle) and Adam Coon (130 kg/Greco-Roman).

Five other Americans are in a tie for No. 3 in their weight class going into the season, based upon their 2018 World bronze medals: Mallory Velte (62 kg/women), Tamyra Mensah-Stock (68 kg/women), Joe Colon (61 kg/freestyle), Jordan Burroughs (74 kg/freestyle) and Nick Gwiazdowski (125 kg/freestyle).

UWW made a number of changes to its Ranking Series program coming into this year.

The seeding process for the World Championships and Olympic Games will now include the top four wrestlers in each weight category from the Ranking Series, with lower seeded athletes bumping up should one of the top four not participate in the World Championships. In 2017, if a seeded athlete did not compete at Worlds, that spot was not replaced.

TheMat.com will provide updates on the UWW Ranking Series as the season progresses.
