Shannon, Kerkvliet win bronze at Dmitriev Memorial in Russia; Gabriel Tagg qualifies for bronze bout

YAKUTSK, Russia – A pair of U.S. athletes, DJ Shannon (East St. Louis, Mo./EAP) at 74 kg/163 lbs. and Daniel (Greg) Kerkvliet (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Titan Mercury WC/EAP) at 97 kg/213 lbs., won bronze medals today at the Roman Dmitriev Memorial International.
This is a UWW Junior-level tournament with numerous competitors from Russia, as well as from many other top wrestling nations. A six-athlete U.S. team of Elite Accelerator Program (EAP) athletes are entered.
Shannon, a University of Illinois signee, won repechage and bronze-medal bouts on Saturday. His only loss in the tournament was to 2018 Junior World bronze medalist Bat-Erdene Byambasuren of Mongolia, 9-6.
Kerkvliet, who has signed with Ohio State, opened with a 10-0 technical fall over Andrey Abonov of Russia. In his second bout, he dropped a first-period injury default to 2016 Cadet World silver medalist Adam Beterbiev of Russia. He was in a four-athlete round robin at his weight. Kerkvliet was a 2017 Cadet World champion.
In the second group of U.S. wrestlers, North Carolina signee Gabriel Tagg (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/EAP) has qualified for a bronze-medal match on Sunday at 61 kg/134 lbs. Tagg went 3-1 on Saturday, including scoring two pins over Russian opponents and beating EAP teammate Job Greenwood (Livermore, Colo./EAP), 7-5. When Tagg fell in the semifinals, Greenwood did not qualify for repechage.
2017 Cadet World champion and 2018 Junior World silver medalist Aaron Brooks (Hagerstown, Md./Titan Mercury WC/EAP) was defeated in his opener at 79 kg/174 lbs., by 2018 Junior World silver medalist Abubakr Abakarov of Azerbaijan, 10-0. Brooks did not qualify for repechage when Abakarov was beaten in the semifinals.
Yakutsk is 14 hours ahead of the U.S. Eastern time zone. The Roman Dmitriev Memorial is being held in the same arena which will host the 2019 Freestyle World Cup next weekend.
