Loethen, Morris, Bommarito unbeaten after day one of Beach World Series in Buenos Aires, Argentina

Ty Loethen (USA) is unbeaten after day one in Buenos Aires.
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina - The first day of Beach World Series – Buenos Aires was completed on Sunday, as two rounds of the preliminary round robin competition was held in all eight weight classes, which include four for men and four for women.
Eight U.S. wrestlers competed today, each competing in two matches within their four-athlete Group competition. All eight will also compete on Monday morning, in the third match of their Group competition.
Three of the U.S. athletes had a perfect 2-0 record on day one: men’s wrestlers Ty Loethen of Missouri and Jamal Morris of Florida, both at 80 kg, as well as women’s wrestler Eliana Bommarito of Michigan at Over 70 kg.
Loethen scored falls in both of his Group D matches, beating Ewan Emile LePrince of France in 1:32 and Enrique Perez Castellanos of Guatemala in 18 seconds. Loethen will win Group C if he is able to defeat Hirotaka Abe of Japan on Monday morning.
Morris opened Group C action with a 3-0 decision over Pablo Garcia Garcia of Spain. His second match against Steven Rodriguez Torreyes of Venezuela ended as a 0-0 tie, with Morris getting the referee’s decision. Morris can win Group C with a win over Martin Omar Paz of Argentina on Sunday morning.
This is the fourth of five UWW Beach World Series events which are qualifiers for the 2023 World Beach Games in Bali, Indonesia. (The first three qualifying events were held in 2022). Athletes from the top eight nations in each weight class qualify their nation to compete in the World Beach Games in Bali in August.
Coming into the event, Loethen is ranked No. 10 and Morris is ranked No. 14 in the Beach World Series Qualification standings at 80 kg, so their success today could be helpful in the quest to qualify the USA at this weight class.
Bommarito, the 2023 NAIA national champion at Indian Hills CC, competed in her first international Beach Wrestling event. She secured a pair of 3-0 shutout victories in Group B, stopping Soleymi Caraballo Hernandez of Venezuela and Angelique Gonzalez of France. She can win Group B with a victory over Stefania Zacheila of Greece on Monday morning.
One U.S. athlete finished with a 1-1 record at men’s 80 kg, LaTrell Davis of Ohio, in his Beach World Series debut. He opened with a 12 second pin over Lautaro Agustin Seghesso of Argentina, then dropped a tight 1-0 decision to Maxim Vasilioglo of Romania. His finals group match will be against Manuel Brown of Panama tomorrow.
The other four U.S. women’s entries finished 0-2 for the day, Laura White of New York (50 kg), Emma Lauter of Kentucky (50 kg), Mia Macaluso of New York (60 kg) and Isabeau Shalack of Illinois (Over 70 kg). They will also have their third Group match on Monday morning.
Coming into Buenos Aires, Macaluso is ranked No. 5 in her weight in the Beach World Series Qualification standings and Shalack is ranked No. 7.
Once the Group competition concludes on Monday morning, Group winners and some runners-up with advance to the championship bracket, which will be a single-elimination knock-out format, where the medalists in each weight class are determined.
The first session on Monday is at 10:00 a.m. local time, which is the completion of the Group rounds. At 3:00 p.m. local time, the final session is held, with the Championship bracket and finals in each weight class. Buenos Aires is one hour ahead U.S. Eastern time zone.
This is the first of five UWW Beach World Series events for the 2023 season.
