Hamdan, Altomer in repechage, United States 10th after day two of Greco-Roman at U23 World Championships

The United States saw group two of Greco-Roman begin its tournament on Saturday morning at the U23 World Championships in Tirana, Albania. Two athletes were pulled into repechage while medal hopes were dashed for three athletes. The final session of the U23 World Championships is slated for Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. local time.
Camden Russell (55 kg) began his tournament run with a win over Hassan Alharthi (Saudi Arabia). Russell was leading 8-5 before he pinned his first round opponent at 2:22. In his second match, Russell fell to Aden Uzun of Turkey. Uzun got a takedown and trapped Russell's arm, getting the first period technical fall, 8-0. Uzun fell in the semifinals, ending Russell’s medal hopes.
At 63 kg, Jordan Hamdan fell to Rakhman Tavmurzaev (AIN) in the 1/8 round match. The Individual Neutral Athletes snuck ahead 5-0 in the first period, then ended the match at 5:40 in the second period with two turns.
Robert Perez III (67 kg) won his opening repechage match of the day, defeating Umesh Umesh (UWW) in a 3-1 decision to head into the second repechage bout. He faced Artur Jeremejev (Estonia), dropping a tight 3-2 decision to end his tournament run.
At 77 kg, Payton Jacobson faced Kvicha Ananidze (Georgia). Jacobson fell behind 7-0 early, but prevented the technical fall. He chipped his way towards Ananidze’s lead, scoring five points to cut the gap. In a late attempt to gain the advantage, Ananidze fought hard on defense and got the 7-5 decision.
Michael Altomer (87 kg) matched up against Matej Mandic (Croatia) in the qualification round. Altomer picked up the first points of the match, but Mandic was able to even the score and gain the advantage. He dropped his first match by 12-4 technical fall.
In the qualification round match at 130 kg, Kaleb Reeves took on Assylbek Zhanibekuly (Kazakhstan). Reeves scored four points on a big throw, but Zhanibekuly was able to flip the lead getting Reeves to his back. He won by fall, and Reeves falls in his first match.
Jordan Hamdan (63 kg) and Michael Altomer (87 kg) were pulled into repechage. They will wrestle tomorrow in the last session, set for 4 p.m. local time/10 a.m. EST. Hamdan will face Pravesh Pravesh (UWW) and Altomer will face Samvel Sargsyan (Armenia).
After the first five weight classes, the United States is in 10th place with 16 points. Tyler Eischens (82 kg) and Cade Lautt (97 kg) placed seventh, scoring points for the USA with their placement.
