Elison, Fernandez among U15 champions at USMC Women’s National Championships

The 2024 U.S. Marine Corps Women’s National Championships wrapped up on Sunday afternoon in Spokane, Washington, with 10 champions emerging after a best-of-three series in each weight class.

In the best-of-three series in the 33 kg weight class, Lanaia Selig of Washington emerged victorious over McKenzie Astorino of Pennsylvania. Selig won both rounds, first by a fall in just 63 seconds, and then by decision with a score of 8-4.

Abigail Peterson of Iowa bested Jasmine Buck of Arizona in the best-of-three series at 36 kg. Peterson claimed victory in both rounds, first with a 15-4 technical, then with a fall in just 34 seconds.

At 39 kg, Olivia Hernandez of Oregon finished atop the podium in the series against Daphney Gomez of Arizona. In round one, Hernandez secured the win by fall in 31 seconds. In round two, it was a quick 10-0 technical fall that gave her the series.  

Isla Silva of Pennsylvania emerged as the winner in the best-of-three series against Gail Sullivan of New York at 42 kg. Silva secured wins in both rounds, earning close decisions with scores of 3-2 and 3-0.

It was Paris Soria of California that bested Lyric Hetzer of Ohio in the series at 46 kg. In round one, Soria picked up a 1-0 series lead with a 7-2 decision. The second round went in Soria’s favor, as she was able to get the win by fall at 3:44.

Epenesa Elison of California came out on top in the series against Sophia Marie Gonzales, also of California, in the 50 kg weight class. Elison secured victory in both rounds, first with a technical fall score of 10-0 and then with a fall at 3:22. Elison also won her weight class in the U17 division, and she did not allow a single point to be scored against her throughout the entire tournament.

Carolyn Geckler of Ohio triumphed over returning champion Olivia Bezdicek of Idaho in the best-of-three series at 54 kg. In the first round, Geckler pinned Bezdicek at 2:32. She captured a spot on the Pan American Championships team with a 5-2 decision in round two.

Victoria Carbonaro of New Jersey defeated Caroline Hilton of Tennessee in the best-of-three series in the 58 kg bracket. Carbonaro won both rounds, first by a fall at 2:59 seconds and then with a 14-3 technical fall.

At 62 kg, Taina Fernandez of Maryland emerged on top in the series against Audrey Robinson of Oregon. Both rounds ended with the same score, 10-0 technical fall, as Fernandez didn’t give up a point to Robinson. She was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.

Ava Guilmette of New York came out on top in the series against Janiya Johnson of Tennessee at 66 kg. Guilmette grinded out two wins by decision, the first round 6-4 and 4-3 in round two.
