Stemmet beats Ferriter in featured finals series; Beauperthuy, Bommarito repeat as U.S. Senior Beach Nationals champions
by Gary Abbott, USA Wrestling
HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. – There was high level Senior-level wrestling at the 2024 U.S. Beach National Championships on Saturday alongside the Pacific Ocean.
In a battle of 2024 Beach World Series medalists in the men’s Over 90 kg weight class, Nick Stemmet of the California RTC edged Kyle Ferriter of Colorado in two straight matches in the finals series. Both matches went the full three minutes, with Stemmet winning them both 1-0.
A Beach wrestling match is three minutes long but ends when one athlete scores three points. These matches went to their conclusion, which does not happen often in Beach Wrestling.
Stemmet won a bronze medal at the 2024 Beach World Series event in Timisoara, Romania, while Ferriter won a bronze medal at the 2024 Beach World Series event in Saint Laurent du Var, France. It was Stemmet’s first Beach Nationals title, while Ferriter was a 2023 Beach Nationals champion.
The U.S. Senior Nationals is a qualifying event for the U.S. teams at the 2024 Beach World Series, with champions automatically qualified for any Beach World Series event they wish to enter.
Two athletes won their second straight U.S. Senior Beach National titles, Tyson Beauperthuy of Colorado at 90 kg in the men’s division, and Eliana Bommarito of the Michigan Revolution WC at Over 70 kg in the women’s division. Both were 2023 national champions at the event, which was held in Carolina Beach, N.C.
Beauperthuy swept his championships series over Gerrit Nijenhuis of the Young Guns WC. Beaperthuy got a fall in 2:06 in bout one, and then beat Nijenhuis, 3-0 in 1:33 in the second bout. Beauperthuy won a bronze medal at the 2023 Beach World Series event in Constanta, Romania.
Bommarito won her Senior national title uncontested, and also entered the U20 division, where she beat two athletes for the gold medal. Bommarito was a 2023 Beach World champion, the only U.S. wrestler to claim this title based upon a full year of Beach World Series results. Bommarito has won four career Beach World Series gold medals over the last two seasons.
Unattached Breanna Stikkelman won her second career U.S. Beach Nationals titles, sweeping her finals series at 60 kg in women’s freestyle in two straight bouts. She beat Lorraine Delarosa of California, 3-0 in both matches, ending the bouts in 18 seconds and in 25 seconds. Stikkelman was also a Beach Nationals champion in 2021. She is also a World champion in the sport of Grappling.
Other individual men’s champions were Veysel Pekince of Team Thunder WC at 70 kg and Daniel Richardson of California at 80 kg.
Pekince stopped Bryan Coll of The Dynamic Wrestling Academy in two straight matches, 3-0 in each victory. Richardson edged Justin Grant in two straight. The first match was a 3-2 battle, where Richardson scored the winning point with 23 seconds to go. The second bout ended tied at 2-2, with Richardson getting the decision.
Other individual women’s champion were Avy Perez of the World Team Training Center at 50 kg and Marilyn Garcia of the Titan Mercury WC at 70 kg.
Perez won two straight matches over Valerie Carreon of Texas, both by 3-1 margins. Perez enters her senior year at Birmingham High School, and ended last season ranked No. 24 at 110 pounds in the National High School rankings.
Garcia is a past member of the U.S. Senior National Team in freestyle wrestling and was a 2019 NAIA national champion for Menlo College. Garcia’s first match against Anastasia Hardin of A-Train Performance went the full three minutes, with Garcia winning 1-0. The second match was a 3-0 win by Garcia in 1:00.
This was the first time that the U.S. Beach National Championships, which was first held in 2006, has ever been hosted on the West Coast. Congratulations to California USA Wrestling and the Beach Wrestling community there for hosting a successful Beach Nationals. Age-group results will be posted in a separate article.
