Tennessee holds first Middle School girls' wrestling state championships in the nation

The Tennessee Middle School Athletic Association (TMSAA) added wrestling to its growing list of state championships, with Cleveland Middle School hosting a Middle School Dual Wrestling State Championship on Friday, December 13 and an individual Middle School Girls' Wrestling State Championship on Saturday, December 14.

104 girls from 42 schools advanced from sectional competition to earn their historic spots in the first girls' wrestling state championship in the country for middle schoolers. This event featured 13 weight classes, with the top 4 in each weight class earning medalist honors.

The first individual girls' wrestling state champions were as follows:

75 lbs - Aria Thephavong, Blackman MS

84 lbs - Ava Westenbarger, Blackman MS

93 lbs - Brooklyn Swisher, Ocoee MS

100 lbs - Macie Goins, Ocoee MS

107 lbs - Sophia Lee, Seymour MS

114 lbs - Addison Borden, Spring Station MS

121 lbs - Brystol Potter, Cleveland MS

128 lbs - McKenzie Grove, Blackman MS

135 lbs - Kailee Miller, Cleveland MS

145 lbs - Alonna Hardwick, Stewarts Creek MS

155 lbs - Skye Hancock, Blackman MS

180 lbs - Brooklynn Templeton, Church Hill MS

225 lbs - Ashlyn Garland, Spring Hill MS

The Dual Wrestling State Championships featured semifinal, consolation, and championship match action for 4 teams in Class A and 4 teams in Class AA. Each participating school earned their spot in the championship by winning their sectional tournament a week prior. In Class A, Fairview Middle School defeated East Nashville Middle School 60-29 in the final to earn the first-ever TMSAA state championship in the sport. In the third-place match, Jasper Middle School outlasted Samuel Everett Middle School of Innovation 48-41.

Cleveland Middle School earned the first Class AA championship, defeating Blackman Middle School 46-29 in the final. The third place trophy went to Page Middle School following a 55-19 victory over Warren Co. Middle School.

TMSAA would like to congratulate all qualifiers for the first-ever TMSAA Wrestling State Championships on their historic seasons.

About TMSAA

The Tennessee Middle School Athletic Association was established by the TSSAA Legislative Council in 1992 as an affiliate organization of TSSAA.

The middle school members have a committee of middle school administrators appointed to steer the organization and make recommendations for changes in their Bylaws to the Legislative Council. Final action on all recommendations submitted by the committee is made by the TSSAA Legislative Council.
