The U.S. Greco-Roman team opened action at the 2024 Pan-American Championships in Acapulco, Mexico, on Wednesday. Team USA saw seven athletes earn medals, including two gold, three silver and two bronze.
Hayden Tuma captured gold at 63 kg. Tuma competed in a small round robin bracket, and earned wins against all three opponents. He opened his tournament against Kevin de Armas Rodriguez of Cuba, and advanced following the disqualification of de Armas Rodriguez for using an illegal move. Tuma’s momentum continued as he overcame Carlos Gonzalez Vahos of Colombia in a 4-1 decision, then bested Hector Sanchez Zapata of Mexico, 4-0, in the finals.
Also earning gold was Alex Sancho at 67 kg, with impressive performances throughout the tournament. Sancho opened the day by defeating Starlin Roodhelly Laguerre Laureus of the Dominican Republic, 4-1. His semifinal match saw him face Nestor Almanza Truyol of Chile, where he claimed a 4-3 decision. Sancho capped off his tournament by defeating Andres Montano Arroyo of Ecuador, 3-1.
Camden Russell, competing at 55 kg, fell in his first match to Marco Garcia Alvarez of Mexico, 9-1.
