Women’s College Postseason: Life (NAIA Mid-South), King (NCWWC Reg. II), Iowa (NCWWC Reg. V) win titles

On Friday, three women’s college post-season tournaments were held, two NCWWC Regional Championships, and the first of the NAIA Conference Championships.

NCAA No. 3. King claimed the team title in the NCWWC Region II, held at Emmanuel College. NCAA No. 2 Iowa claimed the NCWWC Region V title, held at Simpson College. NAIA No. 2 Life won the NAIA Mid-South Conference title, held in Bowling Green, Ky.

The top four placewinners in each weight class at the NCWWC Regionals advanced to the NCWWC Nationals in Council Bluffs, Iowa, March 8-9.

The NAIA Conterence Championships each have specific allocations (by weight class) for the NAIA National Championships in Jamestown, N.D., March 8-9.

King wins NCWWC Region II with eight champions and 15 qualifiers; Emmanuel takes second place

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. – NCAA No. 3 King dominated the NCWWC Region II Championships, held at Emmanuel College on Friday. The Tornado won eight of the 10 weight classes and qualified 15 athletes for the NCWWC Nationals. King was also a regional champion last year.

Individual champions for King were Jessica Corredor (101), Samara Chavez (116), Montana Delawder (123), Maria Victoria Baez Dilone (130), Claire DiCugno (136), Aine Drury (143), Cheyenne Bowman (155) and Alexa Garcia (191). Corredor, Chavez, Delawder and Bowman were also individual Regional champions in 2023.

Four of the finals featured two King wrestlers. Corredor beat teammate Avery Kibelbek, 6-4. Chavez pinned teammate Melanie Mendoza in 1:01. Delawder stopped teammate Virginia Foard, 5-0. Drury scored a 10-0 technical fall over teammate Yasmine Oliveira.

NCAA No. 20 Emmanuel placed second with 146 points, and secured six NCWWC qualifiers, led by individual champion Alyssa Arana (170). Placing third was Mount Olive with 128 points, with seven qualifiers and an individual champion, Samantha Miller (109).

No. 11 Presbyterian placed fourth, and earned seven national qualifiers. Emory & Henry secured three qualifiers, and Huntingdon scored two qualifiers.

NCAA No. 2 Iowa wins NCWWC Region V with six champs and 15 qualifiers, NCAA No. 4 McKendree a close second

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Two of the top women’s programs in the NCAA, No. 2 Iowa and No. 4 McKendree, dominated the field at NCWWC Region V on Sunday.

Iowa won the team race with 220 points, winning six weight classes and qualifying all 15 wrestlers for the NCWWC Nationals. McKendree was second with 193 points, with three individual champions and 13 qualifiers.

Iowa, competing in its first official season of NCAA wrestling, was led by champions Emilie Gonzalez (101), Ava Bayless (109) , Brianna Gonzalez (116), Reese Larramendy (143), Marlynne Deede (155) and Kylie Welker (170). Only Deede, a 2023 NCWWC champion for Augsburg, was a previous regional champion.

Three of the finals were all-Iowa battles. Emilie Gonzalez beat teammate Sterling Dias, 7-0. Brianna Gonzalez beat teammate Felicity Taylor, a past NCWWC champion at McKendree, by a 9-3 margin. Deede stopped fellow Hawkeye Bella Mir, 8-4.

Larramendy defeated two-time NCWWC champion and 2023 Senior World Team member Emma Bruntil of McKendree, 4-2.

Champions for McKendree were Shelby Moore (123), Cameron Guerin (130) and Viktorya Torres (136). Guerin is a three-time NCWWC national champion, seeking to become only the third to win four NCWWC titles.

The other individual champion was Sara Lake of Lindenwood (191). Seven teams were able to qualify at least one wrestler for the national tournament.

Life wins NAIA Mid-South title with five champions, Indiana Tech takes second place

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – NAIA No. 2 Life repeated as Mid-South Conference champions, earning five individual champions on Friday.

Champions for Life were Anna Krejsa (123), Sarah Savidge (130), plus the three McBryde sisters, Zaynah McBryde (136), Jamilah McBryde (143) and Latifah McBryde (155). Savidge and Latifah McBryde repeated as conference champions.

The battle for second place was very close between three strong teams. NAIA No. 13 Indiana Tech was second with 134 points, NAIA No. 9 Cumberlands was third with 131 points and NAIA No. 11 Campbellsville was fourth with 127.5 points.

Other individual champions were Stefana Jelacic of Lourdes (101), Tehani Soares of Indiana Tech (109), Icart Galumette of Campbellsville (116), Chamira Cooper of Cumberlands (170) and Maquoia Bernabe of Cumberlands (191).

The conference was awarded 39 NAIA National allocations, which are distributed by weight class. Additional athletes could be added to the NAIA Nationals field as at-large selections, announced by a committee at 5:00 p.m. CT on Tuesday, Feb. 27.

Based upon the results on Friday, Life got 11 automatic qualifiers, with the Cumberlands getting eight, Indiana Tech securing seven and Campbellsville getting six. Eight conference teams secured at least one qualifier to the NAIA Nationals.
