Dom Parrish (53 kg) in the quarterfinals at the Pan-American Olympic Games Qualifier.
Parrish, Miracle, and Elor advance to semifinals at Pan American Olympic Games Qualifier
by Savannah Asmann, USA Wrestling
The second day of the Pan American Olympic Games Qualifier saw all three U.S. women’s freestyle athletes advance to the semifinals following the morning session of action. Dom Parrish (53 kg), Kayla Miracle (62 kg) and Amit Elor (68 kg) will wrestle in the semifinals this afternoon, attempting to qualify the U.S. in their respective weight classes for the 2024 Paris Games.
The semifinals are slated to begin at 5 p.m. CT in Acapulco, Mexico.
The winners of each semifinal match secure the weight class Olympic quota for their country. There will not be finals matches in this tournament, as the semifinal rounds are decisive in qualifying the weight class for the 2024 Paris Games.
The United States qualified 50 kg, 57 kg, and 76 kg at the 2023 Senior World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, last September.
At 53 kg, Dom Parrish opened her tournament with a win in the quarterfinals. Parrish bested Antonia Valdes Arriagada of Chile, 10-0. In the match, Parrish got a takedown off the whistle, then continued the momentum with four more takedowns for the victory.
Parrish will see Laura Herin Avila of Cuba in the semifinals. Herin Avila is a 2023 Pan American Games silver medalist and 2020 Olympian for Cuba.
Kayla Miracle picked up the win by pinning Maria Santana Garcia of Cuba in the quarterfinals. Miracle was put on the clock for passivity, used a swift move to get her opponent to the mat then earned the fall at 2:25. Miracle sees Astrid Montero Chiniros of Venezuela in the semifinals. The pair met last week at the Pan-American Championships, with Miracle pinning Montero Chiniros at 4:28.
In the quarterfinals at 68 kg, Amit Elor saw Brenda Sterling Martinez of Cuba. Elor built on a quick lead, but Sterling Martinez took advantage of the position for one point. At the break, Elor led 6-1, adding a takedown and a gut wrench to lead by nine points. Elor tied up the leg lace for the final two, winning 12-1.
She is slated to face Thamires Martins Machado of Brazil in the semifinals. The Brazilian is a 2019 Junior Pan-American Championships gold medalist and placed seventh at the 2019 Junior World Championships.
