POREC, Croatia – American women Eliana Bommarito and Olivia Pizano remain unbeaten after the first day of competition at the 2024 Beach World Series Final being held at Plava Laguna in Porec, Croatia this weekend.

Bommarito, a 2023 Beach World champion, won her first two matches in the +70 kg round robin bracket. She opened with a 2-1 decision over Romania’s Catalina Axente, followed by a decisive 3-0 blanking of Greece’s Stefania Zacheila. Her final round robin match is scheduled for Sunday morning against Daria Konstantynova of Ukraine.

Pizano exhibited poise in three tight victories at 70 kg on Saturday. She won her Knockout Round match against Croatia’s Milla Andelic, 1-0, to enter round robin play. She took down Dimitra Androutsou of Greece, 2-1, and Viktoriia Hrytsenko of Ukraine, 1-1, to remain undefeated heading into day two.

Also taking a match on the women’s side was Mariah Anderson at 50 kg, who holds a 1-1 record after day one. She topped fellow American Valerie Carreon, 3-0, in her opening match, before falling, 3-1, to Romania’s Ana Pirvu.

The U.S. men’s group had three athletes win a match, all at 70 kg. Justin Benjamin, the No. 3 ranked athlete in the weight class, went 1-1 in his first two bouts. Both Ruben Calderon and Bryan Coll won in the Knockout Round and followed with 0-2 records in the round robin bracket.

Nine U.S. athletes continue on in tomorrow’s round robin, with hopes of moving into the medal rounds.

The Beach World Series Final continues on Sunday at 10 a.m. local time, with the finals scheduled for 3 p.m. Porec, Croatia, is located six hours ahead of the U.S. Eastern Time Zone.
