Women’s College Opens this past weekend: Grand View Open, Bearcat Open, Limestone Open

Each week as appropriate, USA Wrestling will post the results from women’s college open tournaments from the weekend. Here is this week’s report, with five tournaments during the weekend, spanning coast to coast.

Grand View Open
At Des Moines, Iowa, Feb. 4

Notes: Held at NAIA No. 1 Grand View, there were 49 college teams or clubs in this massive tournament, which had both a Gold division and a Silver division, with over 300 athletes entered. In the Gold Division, NAIA No. 3 Southern Oregon had three champions: Esthela Trevino (101), Carolina Moreno (123) and Joye Levendusky (170). NAIA No. 9 Iowa Wesleyan had two champions, NAIA national champion Adaugo Nwachukwu (136) and, competing unattached, Mia Palumbo (109). Other individual champions from college programs were Caitlyn Thorne of NAIA No. 11 Central Methodist (116), Katie Lange of NCAA No. 5 Augsburg (143), Lydia Krauss of NCAA No. 16 Northern Michigan, Tavia Heidelberg-Tillotson of NAIA No. 5 Menlo College (191) and Xena Hernandez of NAIA No. 19 Waldorf (235). The other champion was Senior level wrestler Xochitl Mota-Pettis of Rise RTC (130).

Notes: Hosted by NCAA No. 3 McKendree, this event had some great quality within most weight classes. Host McKendree had three individual champions, Payton Stroud (116), Cameron Guerin (130) and NCWWC champion Sydnee Kimber (191). Guerin’s 8-4 finals win over Senior star Xochitl Mota-Pettis was one of the highlight finals matches. The University of Iowa, competing unattached, had three individual champions in Sterling Dias (101), Ava Bayless (109) and Ella Schmit (143). NCAA No. 4 Colorado Mesa had two winners, Marissa Gallegos (123) and Claire DiCugno, competing unattached (136). The other two champions came from NCAA No. 8 Sacred Heart, Madison Sandquist (155) and Cara Broadus (170).

Notes: Hosted by NCAA Limestone, a variety of teams in the NCAA and NAIA from the southern states came together. NCAA No. 7 Presbyterian had the most individual champions with four, while NAIA No. 4 the University of the Cumberlands won the team title. Presbyterian champions were Samantha Miller (101), Cassy Lopez (109), SierraMarie Miller (130) and Paige Wehrmeister (136). Cumberlands champions were Alexis Medina (116), Chamira Cooper (170) and Jesse Kirby (191). Another college champion was Trinity Howard of NAIA Montreat (123), becoming the first wrestler from her school to win an open college wrestling tournament. Another NAIA college, St. Andrews, had a champion in Gabrielle Holloway (155). Unattached Maya Letona (143), a Columbia student-athlete affiliated with the NYC RTC, was another champion. Claiming the title at 235 was unattached Dasia Yearby of South Carolina.
