Paniro Johnson (Erie, Pa./Iowa State University) has been selected as USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week on Nov. 10, 2022.
A freshman for the Iowa State Cyclones, Johnson, ranked No. 24 in the country, kicked off his season with a pair of wins at 149 pounds, including a 9-4 decision over reigning Big Ten champion and No. 2 Austin Gomez of Wisconsin. The victory helped the No. 14 Cyclones to a 26-6 win over the No. 12 Badgers.
Earlier in the weekend, Johnson recorded a 3-2 win over Little Rock’s Joseph Bianchi.
For his performance, Johnson was also named the Big 12 Athlete of the Week.
Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level.
To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete's name, wrestling program, weekly accomplishments and career accolades to USA Wrestling Manager of Communications and Social Media Taylor Gregorio at tgregorio@usawrestling.org.
