Chance Marsteller (York City RTC/Titan Mercury WC) has been named USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week on June 13, 2023.
Marsteller defeated 2012 Olympic champion and six-time World champion Jordan Burroughs in three thrilling matches at 79 kg at Final X in Newark, New Jersey, Saturday. He will represent the United States at the 2023 Senior World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, in September.
In the first match of the best-of-three series, Burroughs won in a 3-3 decision, getting a point for Marsteller pulling on his singlet late in the match and then getting criteria. Marsteller produced a tough 5-4 win in the second match, sending the series to a third match. A key throw on the edge, which was originally scored for Burroughs, awarded four points to Marsteller on the challenge review. Marsteller completed an 8-3 victory and captured the series two matches to one.
The Final X appearance was the second-straight for Marsteller, as he faced Burroughs in a best-of-three series in 2022. He secured a spot at this year’s event by winning the U.S. Open held in Las Vegas in April.
Marsteller has earned two bronze medals at tough international events in 2023. His only losses have come to Asian bronze medalist Amirhossein Kavousi of Iran at the Ibrahim Moustafa tournament and to 2018 World silver medalist Avtendil Kentchadze of Georgia at the Zagreb Open.
