Olympian and World champ Winchester, World medalists Green, Lampe, Gwiazdowski among entries at Senior Nationals
by Gary Abbott, USA Wrestling
Jacarra Winchester, shown on the way to making the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team, is entered in the Senior Nationals this week.
The 2021 international wrestling season features both an Olympic Games in Tokyo and a Senior World Championships in Oslo during the same year. Although the U.S. Olympic Team Trials is already in the history books, there will still need to be a Senior World Team Trials held in September in the 10 World Championship weight classes in each style to set the Oslo team.
As part of the qualification process for the Senior World Team Trials, USA Wrestling is hosting a 2021 Senior Nationals this weekend in Coralville, Iowa. Not only are national titles up for grabs, but the top five place winners in each weight class qualify for the World Team Trials.
One caveat. All of the wrestlers who competed in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials are already qualified for the World Team Trials.
Looking at the entry list for the Senior Nationals after the online deadline, a number of top stars who have already qualified for the World Team Trials have chosen to compete at the Senior Nationals anyway.
Included is 2020 Olympian and 2019 World champion Jacarra Winchester of the Titan Mercury WC. Winchester, who made the Tokyo Olympic Team at 53 kg, has registered for 55 kg at the Senior Nationals.
Three two-time World medalists have also registered to compete, James Green of the Titan Mercury WC in men's freestyle at 70 kg, Nick Gwiazdowski of the Titan Mercury WC) at men's freestyle at 125 kg and Alyssa Lampe of the Sunkist Kids) at women's freestyle at 50 kg.
Gwiazdowski, posting on his social media platforms about his future after placing second at the Olympic Team Trials, wrote: “But don't expect me to take any time off the mat. It's part of who I am, so I figured why not and wrestle this weekend at the US nationals in Iowa. Cheers.”
Green, who boasts a World silver and World bronze at 70 kg, had dropped down to 65 kg for the Olympic Team Trials but is back at his most successful weight. Lampe is competing in the same weight as she wrestled at the Olympic Trials.
Gwizz is not the only runner-up from the Olympic Trials who is wrestling in Coralville. Peyton Walsh of the U.S. Marines, who was second at the Olympic Trials at 77 kg, has moved up to 82 kg and entered in the tournament.
There are six entries in the Senior Nationals who placed in the top three at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, making the Senior National Team at an Olympic weight: Winchester, Gwiazdowski, Walsh, Lampe, plus Kyven Gadson of the Sunkist Kids in men’s freestyle and Maya Nelson of the Sunkist Kids in women’s freestyle.
Gadson made the National Team at 97 kg, but is registered down a weight at 92 kg for the Senior Nationals. Nelson, a National Team member at 62 kg, is moving up to 65 kg.
A two-time Olympian, Greco-Roman star Ben Provisor of the New York AC, is entered at 82 kg for the Senior Nationals. Provisor had dropped to 77 kg for the Olympic Trials.
In addition to those already mentioned, three other past Senior World Team members are in the draw at the Senior Nationals: Max Nowry of U.S. Army WCAP in Greco-Roman at 55 kg, Dalton Roberts of U.S. Army WCAP in Greco-Roman at 60 kg and Mason Manville of the Nittany Lion WC in men's freestyle at 79 kg. Manville actually made his Senior World Team in Greco-Roman, but is wrestling in Coralville in freestyle.
We will do a more in depth preview of the Coralville field, but wanted to highlight some of the headliners. Below is a list of top stars who are registered to compete. Some have achievements in multiple categories, but we are listing them only once based upon their most prestigious achievement. Fans can enjoy these stars live on FloWrestling this weekend.
