Hafizov drops Greco-Roman opener at 60 kg, still has possibility of repechage

MAKUHARI, Chiba, Japan - Ildar Hafizov (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) was defeated in his opening match at 60 kg, but still has the possibility of getting pulled back into repechage
Hafizov was defeated in his opening match against Luis Orta Sanchez of Cuba, 5-0. Hafizov was hit with a passivity penalty to trail 1-0 in the first period, but defended well against Orta from par terre. Orta scored a takedown to make it 3-0 at the break. Late in the second period, after an extended period with no scoring, Hafizov was penalized with a caution and two points for his attacks to Orta’s head, giving Orta the final two points of the bout.
Orta won the 2020 Pan American Olympic Qualifier and is also a 2019 Pan American Championships gold medalist.
Orta continued his strong wrestling in the quarterfinals, upsetting No. 2 seed and past World champion Sergey Emelin of Russia, 4-3. Orta must win his semifinals match this evening against Victor Ciobanu of Moldova in order to pull Hafizov back into the repechage on Monday morning.
In addition to 60 kg, there was action at 130 kg in Greco-Roman this morning. The USA did not have a representative at 130 kg Among the semifinalists is three-time Olympic champion Mijian Lopez Nunez of Cuba.
