Update: Yi wins Veterans Greco-Roman gold medal, Jones claims bronze medal in Greece

LOUTRAKI, Greece – David Yi of Folsom, Calif. won a Veterans World Greco-Roman gold medal at 62 kg in Div. B (ages 41-45) on Friday.
Yi went 4-0 in a five-athlete round robin. His toughest match was his fourth bout, a 3-1 decision over Daniel Franke of Germany. Yi opened with a pair of 8-0 technical falls over Svetoslav Dmitrov of Bulgaria and Roger Stewart Frederick of the USA, then stopped Alisghar Abkar of Iran in an 11-2 technical fall.
Yi becomes only the 10th UWW Veterans World champions in Greco-Roman from the USA, a short list which also includes Chris Brown (2014, 2016), Ronald Hughes (2004), Valentin Kalika (2009), Gregg Stensgard (2012), Mohammed Taheri (2013), Shirzad Ahmadi (2015), Michael Tuck (2015), Steve Barkman (2015) and Hedj Nelson (2017). Brown is the only two-time Veterans Greco-Roman champion from the USA, while Ahmadi is the only U.S. wrestler to win Veterans golds in both freestyle and Greco-Roman the same year.
The USA has now won six Veterans World titles this year, with freestyle wrestlers Dan Chaid (Div. E, 130 kg), Rob Prebish of Richmond, Va. (Div. C, 62 kg), Stephen Horton of Cibolo, Texas (Div. D, 70 kg), Jon Banko of New Kensington, Pa. (Div. D, 78 kg) and Reese Humphrey of of Dayton, N.J. (Div. A 70 kg) also standing on the top of the podium.
Winning a bronze medal at 130 kg in Div. E was Brian Jones of Los Angeles, Calif. at 130 kg in Div. E. Jones had a 1-2 record in a four-athlete round robin at his weight class.
The Veterans Greco-Roman World Championships continue on Saturday with competition in Div. C and Div. D. Pairings are listed below. Loutraki is seven hours ahead of U.S. Eastern time zone All of the action is live on FloWrestling.
